Cong to gherao PM’s Varanasi constituency office over BHU ‘rape’ case

Ajay Rai, chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, said party workers would gherao PM Modi’s constituency office in Varanasi on Tuesday to protest the alleged involvement of BJP local leaders in the gangrape of a BHU student.

On Sunday, authorities arrested three men who claimed to be members of the BJP’s IT cell on their Facebook page, two months after a lady student was allegedly gangraped within the IIT-BHU campus. Rai stated that the BJP’s IT cell convenor in Varanasi, Abhishek Chauhan, and co-convenor Saksham Patel had been sent away by the party to work in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections so that they could not be arrested.

“Had they been arrested before the elections, the message would have gone out to the entire country that these three BJP officials are rapists,” said the Congress’ Uttar Pradesh unit chief, adding that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should reveal when bulldozers will raze the accused’s homes.

The sale of the 30th tranche of electoral bonds will open for sale on Tuesday.

As part of efforts to increase openness in political raising money, electoral bonds have been promoted as an alternative to cash donations to political parties. “From January 2 to January 11, 2024, State Bank of India (SBI) has been authorized to print and encash Electoral Bonds through its 29 Authorised Branches,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement on Monday. The first batch of electoral bonds were sold in March 2018.

Electoral bonds can only be cashed by an approved political party who has a bank account with an authorized bank. The only authorized bank to offer electoral bonds is SBI.

Registered political parties with at least 1% of the votes cast in the most recent Lok Sabha or Assembly elections are eligible for electoral bond funding.

Why is it significant: The electoral bonds system has drawn criticism. The scheme’s main criticism is that it does the exact opposite of what it was intended to do: provide openness to election spending.

Critics contend that electoral bonds are only anonymous to the general public and Opposition parties. The fact that such bonds are offered through a government-owned bank (SBI) allows the government to learn who is backing its opponents. As a result, the government of the day can either extort money, particularly from large corporations, or victimize them for not backing the ruling party, giving the party in power an unfair advantage.

Shah to review J&K law and order in high-level meet

According to reports, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will likely host a high-level security review conference on Jammu and Kashmir in Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the law and order situation.

He will also go over the area dominance plan, the zero terror plan, the law and order situation, UAPA cases, and other security-related concerns.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, and Director General of Police RR Swain are expected to attend the meeting, which comes just days after the Poonch encounter with terrorists, which was followed by three alleged custodial deaths, putting the government in a bind.

Hop growers demand more commissions, prompting an indefinite strike.

The All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Association will go on indefinite strike on Tuesday to demand a raise in ration shop commission.

“Since the implementation of the National Food Security Act across the country, 50% of urban and 25% of rural people have been out of the ambit of ration distribution,” the association wrote in a recent letter to State Food and Supplies Minister Rathin Ghosh to inform the government about the strike. On the one hand, the public distribution system has diminished, while ration traders’ livelihood are threatened.”

“We are forced to observe a nationwide indefinite ration strike from January 2, 2024 due to non-fulfilment of our long-standing demands and imposing the burden on state governments,” the group wrote in its letter.

Biswas also asked the Centre to carry out the World Food Programme’s guidelines “without delegating the responsibility of the Central Government to State Governments and Union Territories.” “We’ve been looking for a grant to help with handling losses for a long time…Despite the actions made by the state government, it has been discovered that there is a significant disparity in the opening and closing balances shown by the e-PoS and the site controlled by the state government each month. “We have brought this to the government’s attention on several occasions,” he stated.

“We have contacted the state and central governments many times to request an increase in our commission,” Biswas told The Indian Express on Saturday. Many states, like Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Jharkhand, and Haryana, have already raised our commission to Rs 230, while West Bengal has kept it at Rs 95. As a result, we will be unable to serve consumers unless the government increases our commission.”
